IAM from Mars!

In Culture on October 13, 2010 at 11:43 pm

It is been almost a year since I’ve listened to their music. And before I went for my run this afternoon, I found my old iPod shuffle with one of my favourite bands on it: IAM.

IAM is a French rap band from Marseille. Their music represents their city “Marseille” and their Mediterranean culture. They renamed the city of Marseille “Mars” to represent the immigrants who lived in Marseille and who were considered to be Martians by the rest of France.
“La vie est belle le destin s’en carte
Personne ne joue avec les mêmes cartes
Le berceau lève le voile, multiples sont les routes qu’il dévoile
Tant pis on n’est pas nes sous la même toile”

Their southern French accent is not the only thing that makes the band unique. Their diverse culture, their interest in different civilizations and their inspiration from the Star Wars trilogy made their songs memorable and innovative.

Members include: Akhenaton (aka Chill), Shurik’n, Freeman (aka Malek Sultan), Kephren, Imhotep and Kheops (aka Blondin). Most did solo albums and the band is still together, making it the oldest active French rap band.

In three words IAM represents diversity, creativity and talent. I am a big fan because in some way they represent the culture I grew up in and I connect with the lyrics of their songs.

In the end of the day I didn’t go for my run, and I went spinning instead. However I was very pleased to have found some nostalgia.
